Our Story

Port to Promise was founded on the belief that embracing opportunity, taking risks, and working hard can change the course of a life, especially when people and communities lend a hand along the way.

Mansoorali Lakhani arrived in the United States from Pakistan with little more than determination, resilience, and a belief in the promise of opportunity. His journey began in Karachi and carried him across continents. At nineteen, he boarded a cargo ship as a cleaner to earn money for his family, working his way through Europe before arriving in the United States through the port of New Orleans. He later settled in Chicago, where he met his wife, Shamim.

Shamim Lakhani was born in Karachi, Pakistan, the middle child of five siblings. From a young age, she dreamed of traveling and building a better life for herself. Despite hesitation from her family, she boarded a plane to Chicago at just seventeen years old. She supported herself through small jobs, including working in fast food restaurants, learning resilience and independence early on.

In May 1980, Mansoorali and Shamim married and began building their American dream together, one shaped by perseverance, long days, and unwavering commitment. Over time, effort turned into opportunity. More than forty years later, they own eight hotels and four gas stations, and are the proud parents of three children and grandparents to eight.

Their story reflects more than the traditional American dream. It reflects what becomes possible when opportunity meets effort, and when people along the way are willing to offer support and belief. “Through this nonprofit, we remember every person along our path who lent us a helping hand,” says Shamim Lakhani.

Today, as immigrant communities face increasing scrutiny, fear, and attacks on their dignity, sharing these stories matters more than ever. Port to Promise exists to affirm that immigrant voices belong, that their contributions matter, and that leadership already exists within our communities. By coming together, across generations, industries, and experiences we strengthen not only individual futures, but the social fabric that makes opportunity sustainable.

Through education, mentorship that goes beyond advice, and access to scholarships and internships, Port to Promise builds bridges for young immigrant youth. Our work is grounded in partnership, community, and the belief that empowering immigrant students today strengthens leadership for tomorrow.
